ALP announces broadband plan

Labor pledges $4.7bn for Australian broadband network

Labor leader Kevin Rudd has announced that Labor would build a $4.7bn government controlled broadband network if elected.

I was already planning on voting for Labor at the next federal election but this announcement has sold me completely. ;> Australia needs a decent broadband network to be competitive globally.

I wonder if they'd also try to pressure telcos to drop the cost of trans-Pacific data. I remember reading that this particular cost is a major issue with Australian VFX companies that need to pipe a lot of data from Hollywood etc and we're losing a lot of business we'd otherwise win. Stupid Telstra.
